Walt McCandless - Chris's father. Chris finds out that he had an affair with his ex wife after he got married to Billie. He had another son with her, Quinn McCandless. This is one of the main reason why Chris resents his father.
Carine McCandless - Chris's sister. Takes Chris's death really hard. She cried hysterically for hours after she received the news. She made her first million at a very young age, even though she hated how much her parents worked when she was a kid. She is similar to Chris in many ways. They are both very energetic, and quick to state their opinions. She also clashed with her parents, however she made peace with them after a while, unlike Chris.
Jon Krakauer - Set out to climb Devil's thumb. Figures of male authority arouse emotions in him. He disappointed his father in the usual ways as a kid, much like Chris. He became obsessed with mountain climbing, but Devil's thumb proved to be too large of a task for him.
Eric Hathaway - A high school friend of Chris. Chris told him they were going to go downtown together, however he didn't mention that they were going to feed the homeless. Chris would often go downtown and do things like this, unlike typical high school students.
